99% of the sites that are built by Pêng Design are powered by a content management system. A content management system (CMS) is a computer application used to create, edit, manage, search and publish various kinds of digital media and electronic text.
CMSs are frequently used for storing, controlling, versioning, and publishing industry-specific documentation such as news articles, operators' manuals, technical manuals, sales guides, and marketing brochures. The content managed may include computer files, image media, audio files, video files, electronic documents, and Web content. These concepts represent integrated and interdependent layers. There are various nomenclatures known in this area: Web Content Management, Digital Asset Management, Digital Records Management, Electronic Content Management and so on. The bottom line for these systems is managing content and publishing, with a workflow if required.
A way for the owner(s) of a website to easily add, update or delete content to their website, and the freedom to do so when they choose. The site's structure and content are completely separated, so no worries about technical details when adding a page to the site for example.
Mostly we will work with well known open source software packages such as Drupal, Joomla, Wordpress or Typo3, depending on the wishes and needs of the client. Each package has it's advantages over others. Pêng Design will inform the client about them and together a decision will be made.
Custom made CMS Some sites have such specific needs, that modifying a ready made CMS will cost more time than starting from scratch. For Allesoversterrenkunde.nl, by now the leading Dutch website for astronomy of Govert Schilling, I built a CMS on Perl, in which we were able to fit all the specific functions as setup in the original site description. For example, all images that are added to the site are resized and extremely cropped to fit perfectly with the layout for standard articles. There are dozens of these functions and building a custom CMS provides 'an easy ride' to update the site which happens more times a day.
